Synopsis:

1 Litre of Tears (the movie) is also known 'A Diary with Tears or A Diary of Tears' is an amazingly moving movie. 1 Litre tells the true life story of a young Japanese girl named Aya Kito born on July 19,1962. Aya Kito entered high school like any other normal happy-go-lucky teenager. She loved to play basketball, talk with her friends and had a crush on a boy. A normal teenager...However, when Aya turned 15 she started to act strange. She would fall, drop her food, trip over her own feet, and wasn't able to reach down and pick up her bag. No one at first seemed to notice the change in her behavior - but her mother, a nurse, became concerned. She brought Aya to the hospital where the doctor discovered Aya ,although young, was suffering from an illness called spinocerebeller ataxia. At 15 she was already beginning to slowly die. At first her parents could not bring themselves to tell their daughter that she was dyeing - she was still their baby. However, as her illness begins to progress they confess to Aya that she will soon not be able to walk, talk, hold anything, and will eventually die. There was no cure for her. Aya (in real life) began to write a diary everyday. The diary contained her struggles, her tears, and her hope. She knew she was going to die no matter what she did. Her diary ,therefore, was her courage to live to the next day. She died May 23, 1988.
The movie is based on the everyday diary entries of Aya. This movie will bring you to tears because it is very accurate to her true life story. It will make you think...what would I do if I was told I was dyeing when I was 15...? Her diary, by the way, was published not long after her death and has served as hope for thousands of people dyeing of the same illness of Aya in Japan. I will see if I can post some of the entries..I will keep you posted. I have read it - it's moving.
Aya's story was also told in a Japanese drama also named 1 Litre of tears (it's just as good) and it can be downloaded in our Japanese drama section.
